I remember when I was a kid, innocently I asked to my mom, “Mom… from where I came from?” My mom, without even see my face because she was sewing, answered the question with a very very short answer, “from womb.” No further explanation. I looked at my mom’s face, went down to her stomach and think, “Is she mean it or just bully me?” I decided not to ask anymore, but I keep the question in my mind.
The next 12-15 years after I asked that question, I finally know exactly the answer of that my long oldie question, "Where I came from". Biology answers perfectly that question. To make a baby, a sperm must meet an ovum inside the woman. It is called fertilization. Sperm and ovum merge into a single diploid cell called the zygote. The zygote will begin to divide by mitosis to produce multicellular organism. Then it becomes an embryo. Couples week later, embryo becomes a baby!
Satisfied? NO! I even have more and more questions! If man is made up from sperm and ovum, then who has those cells for the first time? How come so many people live on earth? From where were they come from? From where was the earth come from?
Those questions were answered through religion subject when I was in senior high school. The teacher said that everything in this universe is created by God and controlled by His will. Oh, come on…! I am not a kid anymore. Give me logical explanation rather than those “God things”! (What a stubborn and obstinate teenage I was!)
Through science, I got the answers. I got logical explanation through Charles Darwin’s evolution theory. Science even can explain the origin of universe through Stephen Hawking’s Big bang theory. So, I love science. It can explain much better and logic than the Bible. And the worst thing is science principles seem against what the Bible said. Science principles seem contrary to Bible! So, which one is right? Is the Charles Darwin’s evolution theory or creation of man in Genesis? Is Stephen Hawking’s Big bang singularity theory (which explain the origin of universe) or seven days universe creation in Genesis? At that time (when I was teenage), I believed in science (and I think million people out there also think like I did!). What about you? Which one do you believe? Science or Bible? Scientist or God?
If you believe in Darwin theory (that mankind is a product of million years natural evolution), then it seems you’re not going to believe that the first man is Adam, who is God creation, right? Darwin discovered that mankind is a product of million years natural selection - and he didn’t mention about God at all!
According to the Bible, the first man was Adam, and if you trace back, you’ll find that Adam lived 20,000 years ago (roughly the time of the Genesis flood). What if I told you that scientists have evidence from the fossil record that modern man originated in Africa about 150,000 years ago? It is scientifically proof! They’re using the decay of uranium-234 to thorium 230 to determine the age of calcium carbonate deposited in caves and fossils springs! They’re using thermal ionization mass spectrometry that allows them to obtain dates with a precision of 1% of the age! See?
So, what do you think? Do you still believe that the first man was Adam? Which one is right? Is Darwin theory with all scientifically evidences or God?
I’ll tell you, friends. Now I know that God who created this whole universe, He also includes science inside it (the science that Darwin discover, the science that Stephen Hawking discover, all that science are God’s creation!). Science will never break God’s laws. Word of God is above all the science. Word of God can break the science principles (Peter walked on the water - Matthew 14:29, Jesus made water wine, time stopped for a whole day - Joshua 10:13) but not in contrary. Science WILL NEVER break God’s laws - but human’s perception does.
I have the analogy. Suppose there’s an ant which is wanted to know what human being is like. He walked around on thumb’s toenail. After a while, he concludes that human being is flat and solid. He refused the concept that human being also has head, hand, foot, blood… What he knows about human being is just a nail. Poor ant!
Unfortunately, that ant is just like us. We find small part of the science, and then we conclude that Bible (the Word of God) is wrong and the right one is science! Poor us!
Till now, I believe in Darwin’s Evolution theory (except the part that mankind’s ancestor came from monkey, it’s a misperception from Darwin’s book, “The Origin of Species”. Darwin never said that our ancestor is a monkey! What Darwin said is that human being to walk erect on two legs with a striding gait, needs thousand year evolution. We’re not monkey’s descendant!) If someone ask me, “Do you believe in evolution?”, I’ll say “yup, I believe that human beings are the product thousands year evolution.
Ha? So, I don’t believe that Adam was the first man?
Don’t get me wrong! I believe 1000% in Word of God. I believe what the Bible said, that God create the first man, and he was Adam!
Hmm… So, Adam and Eve is prehistoric man? They look like monkey…? Find some food in the jungle, hunt the animals (and maybe sometimes they were hunted by the animals). Can you imagine, Adam and Eve are in the cave, then someday Adam said to Eve, “Eve, my wife, I want to hunt the deer. You prepare the fire, kay? Don’t forget to milk Cain and Abel. If they cry out, the dinosaur will be attracted to come into this cave, and eat all of you! I don’t want to be a widower, you know!” Then Adam with tiger skin clothe and also brought stone cudgel walk out from the cave and hunt some deer in Eden garden. Hoho2… The Bible never said that!
Evolution process is a God’s creation. Check how Bible wrote about this evolution process.
Genesis 1:24: (NKJV) “And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.”
When God said in Genesis 1:24, the evolution starts. Bible didn’t say about how long it happens. I believe, this is the time of evolution. The sentence: “Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind” doesn’t mean suddenly the tigers, elephants, dogs, cats, ducks came out from down the earth. It needs process. It needs thousand even million years! Darwin wrote about this process as evolution (I think we should say thanks to Darwin because he can explain “Let the earth bring forth the living creature” as written in Bible).
Were there human beings at that time? Well, it depends on the definition of “Human being”. If you have definition “human being is a man, who walk erect on two legs with a striding gait”, then the answer is “No, there were no human beings at that time” (Check the Bible, God doesn’t create man yet at that time). But, “prehistoric-man” most probably, already exist. But they’re not man! They’re a part of the Word: “Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind”. They just look like a man, but not a man. Thousand years later, the scientists found their fossils (and they think they’re our ancestors).
So, where’s the “real-man”?
Verse 26 is the answer. “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” See? After God made those living creature, He created “the real-man”. How he created “the real-man?”
The answer is in Genesis 2:7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Wow! Wonderful. This is the real man. This is us. Created by God in His image, and equipped with breath of life (Spirit of God). The living creature in verse 24 didn’t have breath of life. They just have body, but only the real-man has breath of life.
If you read the verse, it’s short. But it doesn’t mean that the time process also short. There’s a moment in time when God created man in His image, equipped with breath of life. And that man was Adam.
Just imagine, if Moses wrote book of Genesis very complete (big bang theory, evolution theory, origin of planets, galaxy, how earth rotate, extinction of the dinosaurs), surely the Israel would think that Moses is a liar (because they didn’t have science like we know now!). So, God gave Moses the wisdom to write book of Genesis, but yet not break the science principles.
So, back to Adam. When Adam and Eve were created by God, most probably, there were also “another-men” (genetically same, but they don’t have breath of life). Only Adam and Eve were created in God image and have breath of life from God. Is it different between Adam and “the-other-men”? Of course! Man with breath of life can communicate with God, realize that they were created by God (and the worse, they also can fall into sin).
Surely, Adam was the first man created by God in His image, he’s the real-man. And we’re the real-man also. We’re created with spirit of God inside us. Really? Yap! Luke 11:13b, “…your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him”. Do you want spirit of God and be the real-man? You ask!
Don’t be a “fake-man”!
